This hardening of the arteries is most pronounced with Oxycholesterol, they found in tests on hamsters – an often-used substitute for humans. Fried and processed food, particularly fast-food, contains high quantities of Oxycholesterol. Avoiding these foods and eating a diet that is rich in antioxidants, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, could help reduce its levels in the body, according to the researchers.

Food manufacturers have been deliberately adding Oxycholesterol to the food they sell, because they give an addictive flavor. Such Oxycholesterols are partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and trans-fatty acids. For some reason, Western scientists have neglected research into the overall Cholesterol-raising powers of this substance and focused on cell-damaging properties of Oxycholesterol and Arteriosclerosis instead.

In this interesting new study, Dr. Chen’s group measured the effects of a diet high in Oxycholesterol. Blood Cholesterol in hamsters fed Oxycholesterol rose up to 22 percent more than hamsters eating ordinary non-oxidized Cholesterol. The Oxycholesterol group showed greater deposition of Cholesterol in the lining of their arteries and a tendency to develop larger deposits of it. These fatty deposits, called atherosclerotic plaques, increase the risk for stroke and heart attack.

Chen said that the most important finding concluded that Oxycholesterol had undesirable effects on artery function. It reduced their elasticity, impairing their ability to expand and carry more blood. That expansion could be beneficial in the sense that it would allow more blood to flow through arteries that are partially blocked by plaques, potentially reducing the risk that a clot will form and cause a heart attack or stroke.

These Oxycholesterols, a group of Cholesterol compounds that contain extra oxygen atoms were found to be highly toxic and highly effective in producing arteriosclerosis. They were surprised to find that highly purified Cholesterol, free of all traces of Oxycholesterol by being protected from the oxygen of air, does not injure mammalian arteries. In the original research that found ordinary Cholesterol to be toxic to the cardiovascular system, it is unlikely that precautions were taken to prevent the exposure of the Cholesterol they were using from Oxygen. Thus, almost certainly, they were merely demonstrating that Oxycholesterol contaminants, rather than Cholesterol itself, were producing Arteriosclerosis in their lab animals.

These highly damaging Oxycholesterols are found in foods in which Cholesterol is subjected to heating and exposure to the Oxygen of the air during either cooking, food processing or food preservation. Such foods include dried milk powder, dried egg yolk and foods fried in heated oils. The Oxycholesterol in these foods is absorbed into the blood after digestion and then becomes concentrated in the low density lipoprotein faction of the blood plasma. When lipoproteins are taken up by arterial wall cells, the Cholesterol oxides that are released lead to damage to artery wall cells and tissues, ultimately causing Arteriosclerosis.

Recent epidemiological studies, particularly one from Cambridge, have suggested that vitamin E supplements of 800 IE/day reduce by about 70% the risk of coronary artery thrombosis in patients with pre-existent Angina pectoris. Vitamin E is a powerful fat soluble anti-oxidant vitamin that acts by modifying the reactions of low density lipoprotein with oxygen, thus preventing the formation of Oxycholesterols. There is compelling evidence that a trace of a contaminant constituent associated with fat and Cholesterol is actually capable of producing Arteriosclerosis.

For the first time researchers have shown that by inhibiting the action of an enzyme called TAK-1, it is possible to make pancreatic cancer cells sensitive to chemotherapy, opening the way for the development of a new drug to treat the disease.

Dr Davide Melisi told Europe's largest cancer congress, ECCO 15 - ESMO 34 [1], in Berlin, that resistance to chemotherapy was the greatest challenge to treating pancreatic cancer.

"Pancreatic cancer is an incurable malignancy, resistant to every anti-cancer treatment. Targeting TAK-1 could be a strategy to revert this resistance, increasing the efficacy of chemotherapy," said Dr Melisi, who until the start of September was a Fellow at the M.D. Anderson Center in Houston (Texas, USA); he has now moved to a staff position at the National Cancer Institute in Naples (Italy). "During the past few years we have been studying the role played by a cytokine or regulatory protein called Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGFbeta) in the development of pancreatic cancer. Recently we focused our attention on a unique enzyme activated by TGFbeta, TAK-1, as a mediator for this extreme drug resistance."

Dr Melisi and his colleagues investigated the expression of TAK-1 (TGFbeta-Activated Kinase-1) in pancreatic cell lines and developed a drug that was capable of inhibiting TAK-1. They tested the activity of the TAK-1 inhibitor on its own and in combination with the anti-cancer drugs gemcitabine, oxaliplatin and SN-38 (a metabolite of the anti-cancer drug irinotecan) in cell lines, and the activity of the TAK-1 inhibitor combined with gemcitabine against pancreatic cancer in mice.

"The use of this TAK-1 inhibitor increased the sensitivity of pancreatic cells to all three chemotherapeutic drugs. By combining it with classic anti-cancer drugs, we were able to use doses of drugs up to 70 times lower in comparison with the control to kill the same number of cancer cells. In mice, we were able to reduce significantly the tumour volume, to prolong the mice survival, and to reduce the toxicity by combining the TAK-1 inhibitor with very low doses of a classic chemotherapeutic drug, gemcitabine, that would have been ineffective otherwise," said Dr Melisi.

The use of gemcitabine on its own against the cancer in mice was ineffective because of the drug resistant nature of the disease. However, once it was combined with the TAK-1 inhibitor, Dr Melisi and his colleagues saw a 78% reduction in tumour volumes. "The median average survival for the control, TAK-1 inhibitor, gemcitabine on its own, or TAK-1 inhibitor combined with gemcitabine was 68, 87, 82 and 122 days respectively," he said.

"This is the first time that TAK-1 has been indicated as a relevant target for the treatment of a solid tumour and that it is a valid approach to reverting the intrinsic drug resistance of pancreatic cancer. The TAK-1 inhibitor used in this study is an exciting drug that warrants further development for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. In the near future, we will study whether it is also able to make other chemotherapeutic agents, such as oxaliplatin, 5-FU or irinotecan, work against pancreatic cancer in mice.

"Our main goal is to translate this combination approach from the bench to the bedside, conducting a clinical trial that could demonstrate the safety of this TAK-1 inhibitor in combination with gemcitabine, and its efficacy, in pancreatic cancer patients."

At 9:20 PM, July 16,1999, John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr. radioed the tower at an airport near Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts announcing that he was preparing to land. Seconds after, his plane exploded in mid-air, and this was witnessed by several witnesses including a local newspaper reporter and an attorney. On board were his wife Caroline Bessette and her sister Lauren. Lauren's luggage was recovered miles from the crash site, an event that can only be caused by a mid-air explosion.

For reasons that would later become clear, search for the missing plane was delayed for 5 hours, when Pres. William "Bill" Clinton sent out the equivalent of the Sixth Fleet to find the wreckage, hide it and the bodies from the snoopy media, and though JFK Jr. was never in the Navy, and though the families did not consent, cremate the corpses, or evidence, and throw the ashes into the water in a quickly planned, elaborate, Navy funeral at sea.

Behind the scenes, a hokey cover story was concocted. The weather, which was perfect, became stormy. JFK Jr. had a gimpy leg. Reports by the FAA and FBI, both concluding foul play was involved, were buried, the arrival of Israeli PM Ehud Barak to Clinton's court the day before was given an alternative explanation...In fact JFK Jr.'s profound affect on Israel was never mentioned.

But it was huge. In the March, 1997 issue of his magazine, George, JFK Jr. became the only publisher of a major American publication to expose the conspiracy to murder Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. His 13 page expose shook the Israeli establishment to it's foundations:

Israeli Prime Minister Rabin's widow charged Tuesday that John Kennedy Jr.'s magazine crossed "the red line" by publishing an article by the mother of her husband's assassin. "How, of all people, could he do such a thing?" Mrs. Kennedy asked of the son of President Kennedy who was assassinated in 1963. "Perhaps he needed a sensational story to sell his paper. I would expect that he would take a higher moral stand in his paper."

The article claimed that Amir was goaded to shoot Rabin by an undercover agent for the Shin Bet, Israel's security agency. (It) thought it would be done with a doctored gun. The security force let the attack happen so they could take credit for saving the prime minister.

And JFK Jr. was about to publish the final truth about Rabin's murder. This, Israel could not allow. It's operatives were called into action.This interview with JFK Jr.'s driver appeared in Maariv shortly after the Piper crash.

HE COULD BARELY WALK, HOW DID HE FLY?

Yoel Katzavman drove John Jr. 48 hours before the plane broke up. "He was a quiet and humble client."

"How could he have flown that plane with a broken leg? It was really suicidal?," said Yoel Katzavman (38), a limousine driver born in Hakiriot, who drove the Kennedy couple many times. Katzavman arrived in the US three years before and was employed by the Empire limousine service. He was often called to drive John Jr. and Carolyn Kennedy from their New York apartment. He recalls his last ride with John Jr., less than 48 hours before the final takeoff.

It was this self-serving interview that raised my suspicions and I went looking. Here is what I wrote in July, 2009:

So. now what do we do about the information coming out on the explosion of JFK Jr.'s plane? The day it happened I wrote that JFK Jr. was doing more than any other American media figure to get to the bottom of the Rabin assassination truth. I reminded readers that his magazine George ran a 13 page expose of the Shabak's involvement in the assassination. I suggested that this was a brave but risky stand. Then came the tidal wave of data. The FBI Preliminary Report confirming the bomb on the plane and noting the type of explosive was used by certain foreign intelligence services. This was followed by Catherine Crier of Fox TV's The Crier Report, announcing that JFK Jr. was about to meet high ranking Mossad officers to get the full story on the Rabin assassination. Then the German newspaper, Franfurter Allgemaine Zeitung, reported that Kennedy had met with the deputy chief of the Mossad, Amiram Levine to get the full story on the Rabin assassination two days before his plane went down. Then Maariv ran an interview with JFK's chauffeur, who happens to be Israeli. Then people started noting that Ehud Barak was in Washington at the time of Kennedy's finale in life.

And I was not alone in my investigation:

JFK JR. ASSASSINATION: Evidence continues to mount that JFK jr. and passengers were killed by an altitude triggered bomb planted in the tail section of the plane.

Here is the evidence: Kennedy*s sister in law's ( Lauren Bessette ) suitcase was found miles out in the ocean, away from the crash site. Lawyer Victor Pribanic was on the shore fishing and heard the explosion from the same location and time frame where the plane went down. The wreckage of the plane was recovered under *national security* conditions and no reporters were allowed to see or photograph it. The wreckage was loaded on to sealed containers and taken away. The FAA report indicated the recovered engine was fully functional. The presumed bad weather that caused Kennedy to spiral into the water was some 8 miles away from the crash site at that time, so the report of bad weather was part of the cover-up.

Soon after, a correspondent wrote me:

At the time his plane went down, I was living in Massachusetts. Kerryville. The state has gone under. On the particular day, I heard the news.

A reporter for The Vineyard Gazette who was on the island, was quoted as having seen the plane come down to land, and to have seen a flash on the plane. Next thing the plane went out of control and crashed into the sea below. He was quoted on the internet saying this.

Having been a reporter, and having seen many other events go down (I get put in these situations, to witness, etc.) I decided to call the reporter in question. Somehow, I quickly reached him.

He repeated the story.

Next, the article disappeared from the internet, and no more report was made on the news which included any of the information from the eye-witness reporter.

Next, I noticed this disappearance of the article, and called the reporter back.

All of a sudden he no longer existed.

I couldn't find him no matter what I did, despite my having spoken to him hours before.

Gone.

There were reports that JFK Jr. was planning to run for the New York senate seat that Hillary Clinton coveted. Hence the motive. Indeed, that may have been a factor. Pres. Clinton called in the Navy to hide the crime, his so-called Shalom Haver friendship with Rabin was clearly a sham, and his wife's political ambitions could have been promoted by murdering JFK Jr.

But, looking at the priorities, Shimon Peres and the "peace" process had to be protected first. The brave and wonderful publisher JFK Jr. was set to explode all the myths surrounding the murder of Rabin. Unless he exploded first.

He and his colleagues developed a TAK-1 inhibitor and tested it on its own and in combination with the anti-cancer drugs gemcitabine, oxaliplatin and SN-38 (a metabolite of the anti-cancer drug irinotecan) in pancreatic cancer cell lines. They also tested the TAK-1 inhibitor combined with gemcitabine against pancreatic cancer in mice.

"The TAK-1 inhibitor used in this study is an exciting drug that warrants further development for the treatment of pancreatic cancer."

Kung Pao Tofu With Broccoli and Peanuts

There's a fair amount of "set aside" in this preparation, as with most stir-fries, but once you start cooking, it goes very quickly. The crisp broccoli and water chestnuts pair well with the soft tofu and slightly spicy sauce. Serve with rice. Recipe adapted from "A Spoonful of Ginger," by Nina Simonds (Alfred A. Knopf, 1999).

1 pound extra-firm tofu, cut into 1/2 -inch slabs

2 tablespoons minced scallions, white part only, plus 2/3 cup scallion greens, cut into 1-inch lengths

1 1/2 tablespoons minced garlic

1 1/2 tablespoons minced ginger

1/2 teaspoon hot chili paste

1 cup sliced water chestnuts

2/3 cup low-sodium chicken broth

2 teaspoons low-sodium soy sauce

2 1/2 tablespoons rice wine or dry sherry

2 teaspoons sugar

3/4 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

2 teaspoons Chinese black vinegar or Worcestershire sauce

3/4 teaspoon cornstarch

3/4 pound broccoli, ends trimmed and stalks peeled

4 tablespoons canola or corn oil

3/4 cup dry-roasted peanuts

Wrap the tofu slabs in paper towels or a cotton towel, and place a heavy weight, such as a cast-iron skillet or a pot filled with cold water, on top. Let stand to press out excess water while preparing the seasonings and sauce.

In a small bowl, mix the minced scallions, garlic, ginger and chili paste. In another bowl, place the scallion greens and water chestnuts. Set both aside.

In a medium bowl, mix the broth, soy sauce, rice wine or dry sherry, sugar, toasted sesame oil, black vinegar or Worcestershire sauce and cornstarch. Set aside.

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cut off the broccoli florets and separate into bite-size pieces. Cut the stalks on the diagonal into 1-inch pieces. Boil the broccoli for 3 minutes. Drain in a colander under cold running water and place in medium bowl. Set aside.

Slice the tofu into pieces about 1/2 -inch thick and 2 1/2 inches long. Using a large, heavy skillet on high heat, heat 1 1/2 tablespoons of the oil. Place half of the tofu in the pan and sear for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Remove with a spatula and drain. Add another 1 1/2 tablespoons of oil to the pan and repeat.

Add remaining tablespoon of oil to the pan. Add the scallion-ginger mixture and stir-fry about 15 seconds. Add scallion greens and water chestnuts and cook, stirring, about 1 1/2 minutes. Add the chicken broth mixture and stir until it thickens, about 1 minute. Add the broccoli, tofu and peanuts. Toss lightly. Serve hot.

Unlike normal body cells, cancer cells do not stop reproducing after they have doubled 50 or 60 times.

Cancer cells may be able to stop themselves self-destructing, or they may self-destruct more slowly than they reproduce, so that their numbers continue to increase - scientists describe cancer cells as being immortal.

Eventually a tumour is formed that is made up of billions of copies of the original cancerous cell.

Cancer cells also do not obey signals - something in the cancer cells overrides the normal signalling system.

This may be because the genes that tell the cell to reproduce keep on firing, or because the genes that normally tell the cell to stop reproducing have been damaged or lost.

This allows cancer cells to keep on doubling up regardless of the damage caused to the part of the body where it is growing.

Cancer cells can lose the molecules on their surface that keep normal cells in the right place, enabling them to become detached from their neighbours.

This partly explains how cancer cells spread to other parts of the body.

Another characteristic of cancer cells, which helps them to multiply quickly is the fact that they do not become specialised.

Unlike normal cells, cancer cells do not carry on maturing once they have been made.

The cells in a cancer can actually become less mature over time - it is thought that multiple reproduction results in more of the genetic information in the cell becoming lost, making the cells more primitive but able to reproduce quickly and haphazardly.

Cancer starts with one cell, but it can take years before a detectable lump is formed.

There is no one cause of cancer, and different forms of the disease my be triggered by different things - such as the relationship between lung cancer and smoking, and between skin cancer and the sun.

In addition to known carcinogens, cancer may be linked to a person's genetic make-up, age, problems with the immune system, diet, viruses, or even the daily environment. Gender divide: For men the most common forms of cancer are:

The sun doesn't have to wreak havoc on your skin this summer, says DeeAnna Glaser, M.D., professor of dermatology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. She offers tips and her favorite ways to look tan without risking skin cancer or melanoma.

Hot, humid and hazy. Yes, it’s summer again, and time for the sun to wreak havoc on your skin.

Not so fast, says dermatologist DeeAnna Glaser, M.D., professor of dermatology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. There are some simple guidelines to keep in mind before heading out to the ballpark, the pool and even the grocery store this summer.

Everyone is at Risk for a Bad Sunburn
“Although fair-skinned people are far more likely to get a sunburn, even people with darker skin can burn and get skin cancer,” Glaser says. “Young skin is also more susceptible to sunburn, and much of our skin’s sun damage occurs during our childhood and teenage years, so parents should put forth every effort to protect their kids from the sun.”

Not only are sunburns the “number-one cause” of wrinkles and aged-appearing skin, says Glaser, but they also increase one’s chances for skin cancer dramatically.

Not all Sunscreens are Created Equal
“Protect your skin by applying lots of sunscreen 15 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply every two hours and after swimming,” she says. “The sun’s rays are reflected by water, sand and sidewalk, so even if you’re in the shade, you should still apply it.”

Sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 is necessary. Look for bottles – and sunglasses – with both UVA and UVB protection; UVA rays penetrate through window glass, says Glaser, and although they don’t cause sunburn, they penetrate deeper into the skin and can lead to skin cancer, melanoma, wrinkles and skin discoloration.

Sunscreen has improved greatly over the years, Glaser says.

“I think it’s great to be able to incorporate sunscreen into other products that you are already using, like moisturizers and makeup,” Glaser says. “There are also many different formulations today for sunscreens like gels, sprays and quick-absorbing creams to avoid that ‘greasy’ feeling of normal sunscreens.”

Glaser notes that many of her male patients opt for gel-based sunscreens, and she recommends a “physical sunblock” that contains zinc oxide (such as Vanicream and Blue Lizard) rather than a chemical sunscreen because it gives broad-spectrum sun protection and is less irritating than traditional sunblock.

Dress to Protect
In addition to sunscreen, Glaser also advises that people wear wide-brimmed hats when outside – “at least four inches all the way around. Baseball caps don’t count!” she says.

The sun’s rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Glaser suggests during that time wearing solid clothing, and, while they may not be entirely comfortable in the middle of July, darker-colored long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Go Ahead – Fake It
“Many of the tan Hollywood stars that you see on TV are in movies now and actually tan from self-tanners and airbrushed tans,” Glaser says.

Glaser points out the new Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer, which comes in varieties for both the face and the body.

“It’s more forgiving and adds color to the skin gradually after several applications,” she explains. “In general, self-tanners work by coloring the surface layer of the skin and last for about two weeks – until the skin cells naturally shed.”

Spray-on tans, such as Mystic Tan, have become increasingly popular among men and women, especially before special events, the dermatologist says.

Dr. Glaser also recommends bronzers, which are applied like makeup to places the sun would normally hit, like the cheeks, forehead and the nose.

More than 200,000 new cases and about 30,000 deaths are attributed to prostate cancer each year in the U.S. For reasons not fully understood, African-American men have the highest frequency of prostate cancer in the world and the highest death rate from the disease. In other parts of the world -- notably Asia, Africa and Latin America -- prostate cancer is rare.

Prostate cancer cells do not follow normal patterns and grow uncontrollably and spread to other tissues. Prostate cancer is typically a very slow growing tumor, often causing no symptoms until advanced stages. Most men with prostate cancer die of other causes -- many without ever realizing that they have the disease. But once prostate cancer begins to grow more rapidly or spreads outside the prostate, it is dangerous. This aggressive type of prostate cancer can occur at any age. Although the disease tends to progress slowly, it is generally fatal if it spreads beyond the prostate gland itself.

Prostate cancer in its early stages (confined to the prostate gland) can be cured. Fortunately, about 85% of American men with prostate cancer are diagnosed in the early stages.

Cancer that has spread beyond the prostate to distant tissues (such as the bones, Lymph nodes and lungs) is not curable, but it often can be controlled for many years. Because of the many advances in available treatments, the majority of men whose prostate cancer becomes widespread can expect to live five years or more.
What Causes Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer affects mainly older men. Four out of five cases are diagnosed in men over 65, but less than 1% in men under 50. Though rare, prostate cancer can be seen in men even in their 30's and 40's. Men with a family history of prostate cancer are more likely to die of it than is the general population. On a case-by-case basis, doctors cannot say with certainty what causes prostate cancer, but experts generally agree that diet contributes to the risk. Men who consume large amounts of fat -- particularly from red meat and other sources of animal fat -- are most likely to develop advanced prostate cancer. The disease is much more common in countries where meat and dairy products are dietary staples than in countries where the basic diet consists of rice, soybean products, and vegetables.

The underlying factor linking diet and prostate cancer is probably hormonal. Fats stimulate increased production of testosterone and other hormones, and testosterone acts to speed the growth of prostate cancer. High testosterone levels may stimulate dormant prostate cancer cells into activity. Some findings suggest that high testosterone levels also influence the initial onset of prostate cancer. Eating meat may be risky for other reasons: Meat cooked at high temperatures produces cancer-causing substances that directly affect the prostate. A few other risk factors have been noted. Welders, battery manufacturers, rubber workers, and workers frequently exposed to the metal cadmium seem to be abnormally vulnerable to prostate cancer.

Researchers know more about what will not cause prostate cancer than what will. No proven link exists between prostate cancer and an active sex life, vasectomy, masturbation, use of alcohol or tobacco, circumcision, infertility, infection of the prostate, or a common noncancerous condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) that causes an enlarged prostate gland. Most elderly men experience an enlarged prostate to some degree.

June 26, 2006 -- External radiation therapy for prostate cancermay fail more often in obese men than leaner ones.

So says a study in the August issue of the journal Cancer.

The study comes from researchers at Houston's University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. They included Sara Strom, PhD.

Strom's team found that external radiation therapy worked for most of the 873 prostate cancer patients they studied. However, the therapy was 4% to 5% more likely to fail in the study's relatively few obese men.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer -- except for skin cancer-- in U.S. men, with an estimated 234,460 new cases predicted in 2006, according to the American Cancer Society.
Prostate Cancer Study

Of the 873 patients in Strom's study:
All were treated at the cancer center between 1988 and 2001.
Their cancer hadn't spread beyond the prostate at the time of treatment.
Ages ranged from 41 to 84 (average age was mid-to-late 60s).
Most were white.
18% were mildly obese, with body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 34.9.
5% were moderately to severely obese, with BMI of at least 35.

The men received external radiation therapy as their only prostate cancer treatment. None got surgery or internal radiation therapy, in which radioactive "seeds" are implanted in the cancerous area.

Black patients had the highest obesityrates. Obesity was also associated with younger patients.
After Radiation Therapy

The researchers followed the men for an average of eight years. During that time, the men got regular checkups that included measuring height, weight, and blood levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA).

PSA is made by the prostate gland. High levels of the chemical may indicate prostate cancer, but can also signal benign prostate problems. In men with prostate cancer, PSA, a chemical made by the prostate gland, is often used to monitor disease during or after treatment.

After radiation, the men's PSA levels fell, as expected. But during the follow-up period, PSA levels rose on three consecutive tests for 295 men. Those patients had "biochemical failure" of radiation therapy, write Strom and colleagues.

Biochemical failure didn't always mean the prostate cancer returned. However, 127 of the 295 patients with increasing PSA levels had a recurrence of prostate cancer during the follow-up.
Obesity's Results

After adjusting for other risk factors, the researchers found that obese patients were 4% more likely to have a biochemical failure of external radiation therapy and 5% more likely to have a recurrence of prostate cancer during the study.

The study doesn't prove obesity caused radiation therapy to fail in any of the men. As an observational study, the results can't show cause and effect. Also, the study didn't look at men who got radiation therapy in addition to other prostate cancer treatments.

It's not clear why or how obesity affects the chances of success with external radiation therapy for prostate cancer. It will take more work to figure that out, write Strom and colleagues.

Genesis Genomics is Offering Something New Under the Sun

New technology developed by a North-East company could help give sun worshippers some peace of mind. Graeme King spoke to founder Professor Mark Birch-Machin.

Projecting your skin in the sun has up to now been a matter of common sense, lashings of sun cream, and careful examination of any moles on your body. But now an North-East academic is bringing science to bear on the matter with a test which can identify how much your DNA has been damaged by the sun, and ( allied with a lifestyle questionnaire ( the provision of tailored advice to keep you safe both from sunburn, and skin cancer.

Professor Mark Birch-Machin is the man behind Genesis Genomics, formed at Newcastle University to commercialise his academic work.

The professor's team has been looking not only at developing the "skinphysical" DNA test, but also to develop a rating system for sun creams, to grade them according to how well they protect your DNA.

It is this development which has interested cosmetic companies and will see Prof Birch-Machin shortly sign a deal to work in partnership with a major company, and pave the way for Genesis to attract new investment. Prof Birch-Machin said: "We can help cosmetic companies to design smart sunscreen, and we can test existing sunscreens on their ability to prevent DNA damage.

"What we will be able to provide is, ultimately, a DNA protection factor for sunscreens. We are talking to quite large cosmetic companies. They have come to us saying they would like to access our technology. We expect to sign something very soon."

Prof Birch-Machin said Genesis Genomics's new chairman Jim Skinner, who has experience of taking more than 100 products through the regulatory hurdles of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the US, was helping to lead the process of commercialising the company's technology.

Genesis now has a revamped business plan, with the idea that companies it signs up to work with will appear on it. Prof Birch- Machin said: "We will take that plan to investors both in the North- East and in north America. Now is the time to invest."

The more immediate use of Genesis's technology is the skinphysical test, however, which allows individuals to check the state of their skin, and hence how careful they need to be in the sun.

Prof Birch-Machin said: "We have developed what you can summarise as sunburn DNA technology. We are number one in the world for doing this.

"We want people to enjoy the sun, but enjoy it more safely. We are careful to say we are not offering cancer diagnosis ( this is about a measure of sun damage.

"So it's about a level of risk, rather than a diagnosis.

"We just try to get them to adhere to the Sunsmart Code (safe sun exposure advice promoted by Cancer Research UK)."

Genesis asks those wanting a skinphysical test to fill in a lifestyle questionnaire, then this information is combined with the results of tests on a small skin sample, taken from the end of the elbow crease on the upper arm ( to check how an individual's DNA has been damaged by the sun.

Currently, the test is only available from a small number of private cosmetic dermatology clinics but Genesis is also talking to other potential outlets.

It costs from pounds 250, but Genesis hope to reduce the price as more and more tests are performed and the company can benefit from economies of scale.

Skinphysical is also aiming to develop a system to telling people the age of their skin ( to show results such as a 30-year-old woman having the skin of a 50-year-old in terms of damage.

Genesis, with 15 staff, is currently renting space within the dermatology department at Newcastle University, but expects to move in August to new facilities in the university's medical school, which have been refurbished by CELS (Centre of Excellence in Life Sciences).

How to choose an effective sunscreen

Going in the sun to sun oneself is fraught with a myriad of risks. Besides sunburn one has to keep in mind the fact that the ultraviolet rays of the sun have the ability to cause skin cancer. Some believe the sun causes skin cancer.

Given such a scenario, it is imperative that the correct methods are used to protect your skin from the sun. It is here that the user needs to be cautious and choose wisely from the wide array of products that dominate the market. Tall claims made by sunscreen manufacturers are best taken with a pinch of salt. Recently the manufacturers were under the cosh because they made false claims on the labels.

The July issue of Mayo Clinic Women's HealthSource contains some useful tips on how to go about choosing the right sunscreen for your skin. The report says that an average adult requires 1 ounce of sunscreen that is equivalent to 2 tablespoons, for covering the whole body.

The first thing to look for in a sunscreen is protection from ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) sunrays. Both are equally harmful. Secondly a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 is the bare minimum that deflects about 93 percent of the UVB rays. It also enables you to remain in the sun for a longer time.

The third factor to note is the water resistant and water proof qualities. This is vital if you sweat a lot or are planning to swim. "Water-resistant sunscreen protects for 40 minutes; waterproof sunscreen for up to 80 minutes," the report says, reports Earthtimes.

According to BusinessWeek, even the best sunscreens wear off, so reapply them every couple of hours, especially if you've been sweating or swimming. And know when you've had enough. A good way to keep track of your cumulative exposure is to get one of the new products that react to UV light. SunSignals self-adhesive patches, $5 for a pack of 18, gradually change color to a bright orange when exposed to UV rays, warning you to reapply your sunscreen or go inside.

A better bet is an electronic UV monitor, which costs about $25 or $30. La Crosse Technology makes one that looks like a sports watch, or there are styles you can wear around your neck from Chaney Instrument and Oregon Scientific. Program them with your skin type, from fair to dark, and the SPF of your sunscreen. They calculate the strength of the days's UV rays and use that to count down the time you can stay outside safely. Oregon Scientific's model is splash-proof and includes a digital thermometer.

Jason Rivers, a dermatology professor at UBC, however, says that the benefits of sunscreen far outweigh any possible risks.

As many as 20 percent of Canadians have an "irritant reaction" to sunscreen, Rivers told the Straight, and fewer are actually allergic. A common allergen in commercial sunscreens is the chemical benzophenone, he said, which also goes by the names phenyl ketone, diphenyl ketone, or benzoylbenzene. Although it isn¡¯t clear how much of benzophenone is absorbed into the bloodstream, the substance has been found in urine samples of study participants. Nevertheless, he maintains that sunscreens are safe.

"There's no evidence these ingredients cause changes to cells or are carcinogenic in their own right," said Rivers, who's also a spokesperson for the Canadian Dermatology Association. "There's no evidence they have a negative effect on vitamin-D metabolism. There is evidence to support they prevent sunburn and reduce premature aging of the skin and the risk of certain cancers," reports Georgia Straight .

Sunscreen labels. For seven years total the Food and Drug Administration has known that many sunscreen labels mislead consumers into thinking they are being fully protected against cancer-causing sun rays. And while skin cancer cases continue to increase, the FDA's lack of urgency about forcing some truth-in-labeling changes has to end.

A lawsuit against five sunscreen manufacturers argues that the product labels are misleading. The sun protection factor, or SPF, is only a measure of the sunburn-inducing and less harmful UVB rays and not those that cause skin cancer, for example. Some products even claim they provide "broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection," for all types of invisible ultraviolet rays, but that's not usually the case, health organizations say.

That's not good news for beachgoers and anyone working out in the Florida sun.

The FDA ordered sunscreen companies to remove absolute words like "waterproof," "all-day protection" and "sunblock" from their labels in 1999. But the agency - clearly losing sight of its priorities - never enforced these revisions because the corporations wanted to run more tests.

There is a need to move more quickly. The American Cancer Society predicts that of the 1-million skin cancer cases each year, about 62,000 of them will be melanoma and that the disease will claim about 10,700 lives. Misled by the labels, sunscreen users may be assuming they are more well-protected from the sun's harmful rays than they are. And skin cancer cases will continue to rise until the truth is spelled out on the labels.

Holding a fashion clotthing and accessory show to raise funds for Cancer Society sounds like a good idea and fun

Will Carlson and Beth Fuge, both juniors at Stevens Point Area Senior High, will host “Fashion for a Cure,” a benefit fashion show to promote breast cancer awareness, at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the SPASH auditorium.

The show, created, organized and directed by the duo, will feature outfits made by students. There will be 22 student models wearing the handcrafted outfits, along with donated clothing. Students also will operate all lighting and stage work.

Tickets prices aare $5. A reception with refreshments, made by students and parents, will follow the show.

Money will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

`From now on,' said Tokusaan, `I will not doubt the teacher's words.'
The next day Ryutan told the monks at his lecture: `I see one monk among you. His teeth are like the sword tree, his mouth is like the blood bowl. If you hit him hard with a big stick, he will not even so much as look back at you. Someday he will mount the highest peak and carry my teaching there.'
On that day, in front of the lecture hall, Tokusaan burned to ashes his commentaries on the sutras. He said: `However abstruse the teachings are, in comparison with this enlightenment they are like a single hair to the great sky. However profound the complicated knowledge of the world, compared to this enlightenment it is like one drop of water to the great ocean.' Then he left the monastry.
Mumon's Comment: When Tokusaan was in his own country he was not satisfied with Zen although he had heard about it. He thought: `Those Southern monks say they can teach Dharma outside of the sutras. They are all wrong. I must teach them.' So he travelled south. He happened to stop near Ryutan's monastery for refreshments. An old woman who was there asked him: `What are you carrying so heavily?'
Tokusan replied: `This is a commentary I have made on the Diamond Sutra after many years of work.'
The old woman said: `I read that sutra which says: "The past mind cannot be held, the present mind cannot be held." You wish some tea and refreshments. Which mind do you propose to use for them?'
Tokusaan was as though dumb. Finally he asked the woman: `Do you know of any good teacher around here?'
The old woman referred him to Ryutaan, not more than five miles away. So he went to Ryutan in all humility, quite different from when he had started his journey. Ryutan in turn was so kind he forgot his own dignity. It was like pouring muddy water over a drunken man to sober him. After all, it was an unnecessary comedy.

Workers on Minnesota's Iron Range are hoping a new study will clarify why so many of them are dying from a rare form of carcinoma. Men in northeastern Minnesota are getting mesothelioma at twice the rates that would be expected.

Eveleth, Minn. - At a union hall in Eveleth, a congregation of retired iron miners are getting together to communicate concerning a rare and deadly lung disease.

People who get mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos, as a rule by working on ships or in construction, where asbestos was long used as an insulator.

It can take 30 years for the disease to display itself. But then death usually comes within a year and a half.

Mesothelioma has been claiming a lot of victims in northeastern Minnesota, many of them former miners.

Dave Trach runs a steelworker retiree group. He worked at the LTV mine his whole life.

"We were young; we were going to live forever," he says. "Nobody ever told us that you've got to be careful and watch out for this thing called asbestos."

Dave TrachTrach himself is healthy. But he stays in touch with people who haven't been so lucky. He helped organize a screening program for LTV retirees. He says a third of them have come up with some sort of lung problem.

Bill Stodola has only about half of his lung function left. He hasn't been diagnosed with mesothelioma. But his lung disease, associated with asbestos, shows he's been exposed to a killer.

"You saw things you knew weren't good," he says. "You watched these guys mix this powdered asbestos. I just shook my head at that: there were guys that did that every day for years."

The long latency period is running out, and more and more people are being diagnosed with mesothelioma and other lung diseases.

Four years ago the Minnesota Department of Health studied 17 mine workers who died of mesothelioma. The department concluded the most likely cause was "commercial asbestos," that is, the product used in the plants for insulation and other industrial functions.

Some miners aren't convinced.

Tim CarlsonThey point to the discovery 30 years ago of asbestos-like fibers in the waste rock at Reserve Mining. The company was dumping the waste in Lake Superior, and the fibers were showing up in the drinking water in Duluth and other towns along the shore. The discovery led to a landmark court case that ultimately forced Reserve to quit dumping in the Lake.

Dave Trach wonders whether similar fibers at other mines might be contributing to lung diseases, along with the commercial asbestos products.

"I mean, there's products that were used in the plant that I'm sure were used all over the state," he says. "There's something different."

In the four years since its last study, the Health Department has identified 35 more mesothelioma victims. Now the agency plans to dig deeper to try to find out whether taconite dust itself might be contributing to the problem.

Bill Stodola's wife, Mary, says it's about time. She says workers in the mines today are being exposed to the same dangerous stuff.

Taconite fiber"We had a son that worked at the mines," she says. "And we told him no, absolutely not, we don't want you working there any longer."

And she thinks the danger might go beyond the plant itself. She never worked in a mine, but she has asthma and a touch of lung cancer. And she knows ten women in her small town who've had breast cancer.

"So it's just not the mine itself, where you're working; it's also in our air up there," she says. "And then I see last year they were selling all these taconite rocks, and people are using them in landscaping; they're using them on roads in the Twin Cities. That petrified me when I heard that."

Mary StodolaThese days, mining companies offer yearly x-ray screenings to current workers. But some, like third-generation miner Tim Carlson, get their own check-ups.

"I feel I should be concerned with my health so I do my own," Carlson says. "Thirty-five years with U.S. Steel, I don't trust them, plain and simple."

Carlson's uncle died of colon cancer, and his father died from a respiratory problem -- undiagnosed.

The Department of Health is planning a more comprehensive study, comparing the work experiences and possible exposures of mine workers who developed mesothelioma with those who didn't. A spokesman says the study will be able to determine the source of the asbestos, whether it came from commercial products or from the mine dust.

A truck carries taconite rock to the crusher building at Hibbing Taconite. Taconite dust is being studied as a possible cause of a rare form of lung cancer, mesothelioma, which has stricken miners and retirees on the Iron Range.
